AI AgentsAI Agent Fundamentals

What are perception, reasoning, action, and feedback in an AI agent?

In an AI agent, perception, reasoning, action, and feedback are four stages that describe how the agent understands its situation, decides what to do, performs an operation, and learns from the result.

A simple cycle is:

Perception → Reasoning → Action → Feedback → Repeat

1. Perception

Perception is how the agent receives information about its current environment or task.

For an AI agent, perception may come from:

  • a user message
  • an API response
  • a database result
  • a file
  • a webpage
  • application state
  • sensor data
  • the result of a previous tool call

Perception answers:

> What information is available right now?

2. Reasoning

Reasoning is the process of using the goal and current information to determine what should happen next.

The agent may need to:

  • interpret the user's intent
  • compare possible actions
  • identify missing information
  • choose a tool
  • decide whether a previous step succeeded
  • determine whether the task is complete

In many modern agents, an LLM contributes to this decision-making process, often together with rules or application logic.

Reasoning answers:

> Given what I know, what should I do next?

3. Action

Action is the operation the agent performs after making a decision.

Examples include:

  • calling an API
  • searching the web
  • querying a database
  • running code
  • reading a document
  • creating a calendar event
  • sending a message

Action answers:

> What should I actually do?

4. Feedback

Feedback is the result the agent receives after performing an action.

For example, the agent may attempt to create a calendar event and receive feedback that the selected time slot is no longer available.

The agent can then use that result during its next reasoning step and choose another time instead of repeating the same failed action.

Feedback answers:

> What happened after I acted?

How the four stages work together

Suppose an agent is asked:

> Find a suitable restaurant and book a table for 7:00 PM.

A simplified cycle might be:

  1. Perception: Read the request and available preferences.
  2. Reasoning: Decide to search for nearby restaurants.
  3. Action: Run a restaurant search.
  4. Feedback: Receive a list of restaurants.
  5. Perception: Treat those results as new information.
  6. Reasoning: Select a suitable restaurant and check availability.
  7. Action: Request a 7:00 PM reservation.
  8. Feedback: Learn whether the booking succeeded.

The cycle continues until the goal is achieved or a stopping condition is reached.

Why feedback matters

Without feedback, an agent would not know whether its action succeeded, failed, or produced an unexpected result.

Feedback makes the process adaptive because each result can influence the next decision.

In short

  • Perception gathers information.
  • Reasoning decides what to do.
  • Action performs the chosen step.
  • Feedback reports what happened.

Together, these stages form a repeated control cycle that helps an AI agent work toward a goal.
