How do data scientists, ML engineers, and MLOps engineers work together?

Building a useful machine learning model takes more than training it. Someone must make sure the model solves the right problem, someone must connect it to a real application, and someone must keep the whole process reliable as the model changes.

These responsibilities often involve data scientists, ML engineers, and MLOps engineers working together.

A practical example

Imagine a food delivery app that wants to predict how many minutes an order will take to arrive.

1. Data scientist — figures out what works

The data scientist studies past orders, restaurant preparation times, travel distances, and delivery patterns. They experiment with models and evaluate how close the predictions are to actual delivery times.

Their main question is: *Can we make a useful prediction with this data?*

2. ML engineer — turns the model into an application feature

The ML engineer makes the selected model ready for real requests. For example, they build or integrate a prediction service that accepts order details and returns an estimated delivery time.

They also consider response speed, input validation, and whether the features used during training can be supplied reliably when customers place orders.

Their main question is: *How will the application use this model correctly and efficiently?*

3. MLOps engineer — makes the process repeatable and dependable

The MLOps engineer builds or maintains workflows for testing, versioning, deploying, and monitoring models. For example, they can automate checks before a new delivery-time model is released, track which model version is serving customers, and provide alerts if the prediction service starts failing.

Their main question is: *How can we release, operate, and update the model safely?*

How do they collaborate?

The work is not simply handed from one person to another once.

  • Before development: They agree on the business goal, available data, and practical constraints such as response time.
  • During development: The data scientist shares the model's expected inputs and evaluation results; the ML engineer checks whether those inputs will be available in production.
  • Before release: The ML engineer and MLOps engineer ensure the model can be served, tested, versioned, and rolled back if needed.
  • After release: The team reviews monitoring results together. If estimates become inaccurate during heavy rain, they investigate whether the cause is missing data, a model limitation, or a serving problem.

Are these always three separate jobs?

No. Team structures vary. In a small company, one engineer may handle model integration and MLOps automation. In a larger organization, several teams may share these responsibilities. The important thing is to make ownership clear, especially for model approval, production incidents, and updates.

In short: The data scientist helps discover a model that works, the ML engineer makes it useful inside an application, and the MLOps engineer helps keep the entire model lifecycle reliable. They succeed by working as one team, not in isolated stages.
