What is MLOps and which operational problems does it solve?

MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) is the practice of making machine learning models work reliably in real applications—not just during experiments.

Building a model is only one part of the job. Once people start using it, we need a way to deploy it, check that it still works, and improve it safely. That's where MLOps comes in.

A simple example

Imagine an online shopping app that recommends products.

A data scientist trains a model using past customer activity. The recommendations look good during testing. But after the model goes live, new products arrive, customer interests change, and the model starts suggesting items people no longer want.

Without a proper process, a team might have to notice the problem, collect fresh data, train the model again, test it, and manually replace the old version.

MLOps helps organize and automate that work.

What problems does MLOps solve?

  • Getting models into production: A model that works on one person's laptop must also run reliably inside a real application.
  • Reproducing results: Teams need to know which data, code, and settings produced a particular model so they can repeat or investigate an experiment.
  • Managing changes safely: New model versions should be tested before release, with a way to return to an earlier version if something goes wrong.
  • Detecting problems early: A model's predictions can become less useful as real-world data changes. Monitoring helps teams identify issues.
  • Keeping models up to date: Teams can build repeatable processes for training and evaluating new models using fresh data.
  • Working together: Data scientists and engineers need a shared process to build, release, and maintain models.

How does it work in practice?

A typical MLOps workflow connects these steps:

  1. Prepare and check the data.
  2. Train and evaluate a model.
  3. Record the model version and how it was created.
  4. Test and deploy the approved model.
  5. Monitor its predictions and system health.
  6. Investigate problems and retrain or update the model when needed.

Not every step must be automated on day one. The goal is to make the process reliable and repeatable.

In short: Machine learning helps us create a model that can make predictions. MLOps helps us deliver those predictions to users and keep the system working well over time.
